Comments: I learned recently about Treacher Collins from a book that I picked up at the library and was interesting in getting to know some people that had it. I think that you have a beautiful soul, I'm glad that you can be so positive, and I'm sorry for all the bad things that you had to endure. Good luck in the future.

Comments: Hi, I have recently met a guy on the net who lives in the same province as I do, and we have become very close. It took him a while to tell me that he had treacher collins syndrome, but I was glad when he did because it shows that he trusts me and is trying to open up to me. Which makes me think that i am open minded and kind hearted He never really told me exactly what it was so I thought that i would find out on my own, and I found that your home page has been very informative. Thank you very much. I commend you for being brave and sticking up for yourself and not wallowing in self pitty because of how you look, because it is how you show yourself to everyone and how you feel about yourself. Good luck in the future. Your friend Jenn

Comments: Amie, Being from such a party school , we rarely do much on weekends other than do homework, work out and surf the net. For no apparent reason, I typed in my own name to a search engine and ended up at your site. I read a little about you and moved on. That was Saturday night. Somehow, your interesting story stuck with me. I felt the need to send you a little message to express my gratitude. You really are an interesting person. I just wanted to let you know that your page and your biography are reaching people who would otherwise know nothing about you or your condition. I suppose that this is what the inventors of the web intended when they put the global system into effect. Just saying hi, Collins

Comments: Amie - Thank you for this wonderful page, picture and information. We are the grand parents of a treacher collins 3 year old girl and while we were reading your page and listening to your music, our grand daughter, Caitlyn Elizabeth Owen, CEO :-), with her hearing aides on, had me dance with her. (I'm the grand father). We found you, like our Caitlyn to be "beautiful" and know that with support and love she will grow up to have your wisdom, maturity, kindness, tolerance and love. My wife, Deb, made your home page a favorite place and we will visit it often to experience all of it - your friends and family etc. Caitlyn has had 3 surgeries to reconstruct her face and palate and will have many more. She has no outer ear, wears a hearing aid, has a trach and is fed thru a G tube. She is very happy and active and normal in every sense. She is blond like you and has blue eyes. We will tell her all about you and show her your home page and explain your similarities and again will visit you. Thanks, and Love fro

I found your page very informative, thank you for taking the time to do such a great page. I did have one question, i think the possibilities of being MR and having this syndrome are pretty slim is that true, do you know more about that. i enjoyed your web page. Comments: What a great page! I am an occupational therapist and have had the opportunity to work with one TC child under the age of 3. Therapy is provided through the Infant Stimulation Program (birth to 3yrs) in our area, early childhood intervention (3 to school-aged) then your local Independent school district (up to age 21). The point is, therapeutic intervention, if needed, is available (free of charge to the parents) for all sorts of diagnoses, syndromes, prematurity, developmantal delays..., but is way UNDERUTILIZED!!! Perhaps your readers and parents of other TC kids will take advantage of services that are available but not well known. A good resource would be your local MHMR office or (hopefully) the family physician. Congrats on your perseverence, you have my respect both personally and professionally. Hook 'em Horns!

Comments: Hi,how are you doing? I am 14 yrs. old and have treacher collins syndrome (tcs). I go to Seattle for check-ups and surgerys at Childrens Hospital. I had a trache but I don't have it but I still have hole in my neck. I wear a bone-conductor hearing aid on a head-band I like it because I can turn off my sister ha ha. I am in 8th grade and i hope I can do as well as you. I am really into Wolves and how they live and their habits and i hope someday I can study them. So I hope to go to college and get a degree so I can study Wolves. do you have a favorite animal you like and are interested in? I read your web page and printed it so i could keep it for later. I was really excited about the Hearing-aid implant that was in the web page I got. I'm hoping that I can get one later on. It would sure be easier to deal with.

Comments: I am a college junior with either TCS or something closely related--none of the doctors I've been to have been very clear about my deformity. "All" I have is a never-developed middle and outer ear, and my jaw is significantly tighter on that side. Because I can hide my deformity under my hair, people view me as "normal", but I've always felt set apart. I was offered that hearing aid headband when I was younger, but it was decided that it wouldn't help me much unless my ear canal was opened through surgery. My doctors didn't recommend surgery because of the risks at that time, and the small possibility that it would actually help. I'm happy with myself the way I am and can't imagine life any other way, but no one else can imagine the daily troubles I have with the stupidest things, such as noise, air pressure, and even blowing up balloons. I was told that my body could not easily adapt to a hearing aid, so when I say I have a hearing problem people just joke about it or aren't very sympathetic. I REALLY appreciate this website, and I think there are way too many people out there who insensitively shy away from people who are different.

Though we are but one in a thousand, people like you are one in several million. :) I know very few people who have the strength to be as outgoing and as understanding of 'normal' people as you are, based on your page. I have to admit that thru my experiences (meeting people who surgeries and all) that there are few people with TC who aren't bitter about the world for the way they've been treated. By now you may have guessed that I also have TC. With some very considerate people around me, tho, I can't say that I've had quite the difficulty that you have. You've given me a little more encouragement, too, just with the strength you've demonstrated. For that, I thank you. :) Perhaps you've made another friend or two today. :)) Chris

Comments: Hi! Amie I saw your page and I think that your a sweet person. It must take a lot of courage and strenght to have to face the world . I found it really amazing when I read that you have benefited by your condition, because it has made you into the person that you are today. I really respect this about you. And you know, God, does not look at appearances, he looks at the heart condition of people, if their humble, honest and hungry for his spiritual food and are willing to get to know him and to worship him. Those are what he loves. Isn't it nice to know that God is not a God that expects perfection in us? I really would invite you to look into his word, the Bible and see for yourself that God has promised us that soon he will wipe away all tears from our eyes and death and mourning will pass away and he will help us transform the earth into a beautiful paradise. Revelation 21:1-7. Hope to hear from you Amie.

Comments: Amie - Your page is brilliant.I can relate to your problems as I have TCS myself. I am 22 years of age. I reckon I am lucky in a way because I don't think I am as severe as other sufferers. I have plenty of breathing problems to beat the band (sleep apnoea, etc) and my hearing is woeful (I used to wear a hearing aid but I don't really wear one now), and my face is a bit messed up (most notably my eyes which kind of bulge out like a fish and my eyelids look like I ripped them off a baby camel and sowed them onto my own). I know that people can be very cruel and mean from experience. Over the years I have become a bit paranoid like when strangers pass me on the street(especially younger people), I sometimes like around to see if they are talking or laughing behind my back. The worst thing about it all, though, is the way I talk. You know the way when you hear yourself talking on tape recorder your voice sounds so different and you think it's terrible, well when I hear myself talk, I realise why people laugh at me but it's something I have to live with for the rest of my life. I suppose in a way I find it hard to socialise because I am embarrased of myself. There is no history of TCS in my familly at all - How unlucky could you get! So as a result I doubt if I will have any children. I know it's a 50-50 chance but the chances of me getting getting TCS were 10,000 to 1 so what chance have I with odds of 2 to 1! As you have said yourself, it's whats behind the face that really counts. I do get depressed that I am like this and wonder why I wasn't made like other fellas who seem to have everthing going for them. There is such a thing as cosmetic surgery but the way I see it is that God made me like this so why should I change? I thought the 10 things on your list were spot on, especially the fact that people remember you, and your right, the strangest things DO happen! I know that, like every other TCS sufferer, I am completely normal and probably more normal than most people, underneath it all, at the end of the day. I am doing computers in college at the moment which is heavy going. I hope I am on the road to being proud of who I am and worry about more important things in life, like living it to the full. Thanks, Peter

Comments: Thank you Amie, for enlightening our family on Treacher Collins Syndrome. We have a young couple in our church who have just had their first baby. Not only did the mother suffer a ruptured brain aneurism seven months into her pregnancy, but Copeland Susan had to be delivered premature and is a Treacher Collins baby. We were concerned how the church family would respond when they see Copeland for the first time. The parents are learning much, but we feel our congregation needs to know and understand more, too. Your "page" was a great way to get introduced to the feelings a Treacher Collins person has regarding their relationship to others. We want to know how to help our friends and encourage them and Copeland as she grows to be the child God wants her to be.

But I do work with children and teens who have various disabilities. I am also out for the same thing you are: brighter futures for children with special needs, and disability awareness. With awareness comes knowledge, and with knowledge comes awareness. And with awareness comes acceptance. And so on and so on. Would you be interested in joining my web ring? It would give others the chance to find your site and learn more about TCS while surfing page to page on our common theme. If you are interested, the information is at http://members.tripod.com/~imaware/brighter.html . By the way, I also am very interested in Communication Disorders, and hope to get my masters in Speech Language Pathology at some point in the future. Keep up the good work!..... Jenn :)

I came across your page...and decided to take a look.... why not right? Well when I walked into this computer lab this afternoon I had no idea that such a disorder existed... I've decided to do my paper on this topic and I hope thatI can use some info from your page on this paper. Like I said when I walked in here I knew nothing about this disorder or many others that I have found today...but now that I have at least some sense of awareness as to what it is that surrounds me everyday I think that my world is a better place....I wish you the best of everything...but from the sound of things....you already have it.

Comments: Your page is wonderful, and I hope that you'd consider telling your story on my site as well. I hope that you'll have time to take a look. The site is designed to sensitize people to what it's like to grow up with medical problems. I share in its authorship with children around the world who are doing just that, and who told me their stories. The stories are poignant, varied, and speak of the stigma that so many of them experience. I have developed a comprehensive web site with this data, writing stories, designing strategies of inclusion, publishing hints from the children to others, and interviewing hospitalized kids so that they could, through the web, orient others, and gain some status in the process. I have separate pages for teen stories, too! I have a page called something like "people say the strangest things, and I'd love to include your pinocchio story on it if that's OK with you. All the best, Joan

Comments: I am completely inspired by your desire to educate others. I found your homepage by default. I know a girl, well she is really just an acquaintance from high school. Anyway, we are both 28 now, but I heard through the grapevine that she was pregnant. She and her husband were informed early on that their baby had a craniofacial disorder. I got all of this "news" from her close friends that felt so badly for her. Well, I graduated from Texas A&M with a masters in special education. I had been around so many different people with a wide variety of disabilities that I felt this urge to call this girl and let her know I was thinking about her. This probably sounds so strange. Anyway, I found her number and called her completely out of the blue. She remembered me simply because I have a weird name. She was having a "down day" but I let her know that I was praying for her and her husband to have the strength to handle their unique situation. I felt really weird telling this girl that I was going to pray for her and the baby because I didn't know if she would think I was a religious freak. From what we talked about that day, I think the conversation went well. Since, I have heard that she did give birth to a son and the baby did have multiple complications. However, I am certain that God only gives us what He knows we can handle. I am so happy that God gave that baby to Jenny. I am so happy that he will have all the opportunities that you are having to become an independent, and obviously successful individual. I am pregnant now. I feel so confident that whatever lies ahead is simply a gift. I don't pray so much for a healthy child, rather, I pray for a child that is so outgoing, positive, and one that makes the best out of what life offers. Thank you for reminding me to be humble. I hope your life continues to be as great as these formative years. I hope you continue to have fun in college! It truly is one of the hightlights of my life. If I ever get in touch with Jenny, I will mention your website. I am not sure if her son has TCS, Apert or Crouzon but anyone could learn from your well written and eloquent story. Thank you for your giving heart. God Bless, Happy.

It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness? Well, we are all in the business of handing out matches. We don't need to hand out candles, because everyone has one. It's people like you that remind them to look for what they allready had. It's right there in their hands, just waiting to be lit. Boy, you put a smile on my face. Comments: Amie, Your page is "too cool." I know where you are coming from. My friend Terry & I just "founded" a support group for those of us lucky enough to have Rombergs Syndrome. Rombergs is another "no treatment, no cure, we have no idea what to do with you" disorder. I really like your outlook on life - it sounds alot like my outlook. Stop over and visit our page, and if you want you can write to me. Be sure to read my story at http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1018/theresa.htm Hope to hear from you. Peace, Theresa

Now after reading your experiences I think i'll be more able to relate to my patients and look beyond the physical image that my closed mind always portrayed.

I'm a DJ and I wish you lived closer so I could interview you. I do a public service show that gives me an opportunity to educate people of everything from pet care to birth defects. Comments: You go, girl! I wish you well in everything. I am copying your pages because I teach classes on exceptionality for regular education teachers who need credits to renew their certificates, and also for teachers who want to get into special education. Treacher-Collins is an interest of mine, because I am also hearing impaired, having had multiple surgeries on my right ear. I am quite a bit older than you (45), and they didn't have tubes for the ears when I was growing up. I have a pretty good sized hearing loss in my right ear. I survive better than most, cause my left ear is completely normal. Now that I'm getting older, the nerve part of my right ear is starting to fade, cause of that ol' "if you don't use it, you lose it" deal. I can't wear amplification very often, cause I still get ear infections (now isn't that impressive for my age). I am currently employed as a speech-language therapist in the schools. However, my first (and only) love is hearing, and anything having to do with kids with any kind of hearing difficulties. I knew what T-C was because I've worked with kids with that before. I wish you all the luck in the world. Karen

I really enjoyed your site, as a parent I find that I want to protect my daughter from being teased by other kids. But reading your story about being on the bus and being teased, made me realize that she is very strong and special and that she'll be able to handle herself and become a better person. I would really like to stay in touch with you. If ever you have time, my email address is. My daughter currently has a trach. and I'm really interested in the CPAP that you use. My daughter had a trach for the first year of her life and then pulled it out and we went 2 years without it(It WAS GREAT!). Since her cleft palate surgery last year, we've had the trach replaced. I hope to hear back from you. Many Thanks, Becky Meyer

I turned to the internet to educate myself a bit. I will also meet his mother and hope that after getting to know her I can share your web page with her. I am sure that she will love it! Really some good information and beautiful pictures. I was feeling a bit nervous to meet them both, especially not knowing too much about this particular syndrome. I am now more at ease and excited for tomorrow to come. Thank you so much.

I had not heard of this genetic disorder before, & whenever I encounter something new in my work I do some research. This baby's mother tells me she had heard there is an excellent surgeon in Tennessee that provides care for treacher collins children & I am attempting to locate him by searching the net. I think your home page is great & the essay your friend wrote was done excellent. I wish society would revert to the innosence of their childhood when it comes to those that are different. I am a pediatric nurse & have been amazed & appalled at what people say & do when it comes to a child with a disability or a birth defect. Good luck where ever your future takes you.

Comments: Hi Amie! You have a wonderful website - and you must be a wonderful person too! I came uppon your site while researching on TCS - that's the subject of the work I'm doing to get a Master's Degree in Human Genetics. I wish you the best of luck, and may you always keep such good humor and self confidence. I think everyone has TCS should read your page and be inspired by it. A kiss all the way from Brazil, Alex

Comments: Hi Amie, My name is Chaim Boermeester, I am 28 Yaers old and live with my wife in Netanya, Israel. I became interested in Treachure Collins syndrome after one of my colleagues told me that she got a baby with this syndrome. I promised her I would surf the Internet and see if I can find something more about it. My colleague is very worried that her babyson Gai is going to have a horrible life with all his classmates and friends laughing at his expense.. She is seriously considering flying to Paris to get him plastic surgery. Maybe you could share with her some of your own experiences. P.S. You have a great website!

Comments: One of my six year old's best friends is named Nikolas, and he also has Treachers Collins. Nikolas is an exceptionally bright, sweet, and caring child. We like to think our son Al is bright and caring too. In the last couples of months the thing we are most proud about was an incident where Al was defending Nikolas. For the summer Nikolas was going to the same daycare as Al. One of Al's established friends was refusing to play with Nikolas and Al took the young kid aside and explained why he was wrong. You mentioned Jr High as being the toughest time. I know Nikolas must have his share of trials, but at his young age now he enjoys a certain celebrity status at the local school. Take care and good luck. We enjoyed your page.

Comments: Hello from one Trecher Collins person, to another. I am 36 years old and have Treacher Collins Syndrome. Your web page is very inspiring and creative. It's amazing how much I have learned recently (by way of the Internet) that there are more people afflicted with TC than I really thought. The Internet bridges the geographical gap which somehow reduces the isolation one feels when dealing with a unique syndrome. I wish you all the best in your college education and your future. If you keep in mind the message in your homepage, I believe you will touch more lives than you can ever imagine. God Bless.... Paul de Vries

Comments: A very dear friend of mine has a daughter with Treacher Collins. Amanda is 14. In fact, she just had surgery today. Recently they ran into problems with Medicaide. Their pediatrician was changed on them with no notice to speak of three days before this surgery. Upon going to the new doctor to get a letter of recomendation for the surgery, she found that not only had this doctor never even heard of this syndrome, she wasn't even a pediatrician. They were locate in a bad part of and the (doctor) didn't even wash her hands when she came into the room and never got up out of her chair. Just wheeled around on it. Didn't examine her properly or anything. My friend is on Medicaide because her husband suffer an injury at work many years ago and the oppurtunity to keep your insurance wasn't a law back then. Therefore, no insurance company will give them the time of day. So, as victims of the system, the system is basically telling them that they don't deserve proper nor adequate health care. My friend also works very hard along with her husband to make sure that all of her chidren(she has three, one with epilepsy)have everything they could possibly need. It pains me greatly to see her having to deal with this as it could very easily happen to anyone, including myself, since there is no known reason this happens. I would like to hear your oppinion on the subject or know if you have heard of this happening to anyone else. Also, I'm sure Amanda would love to hear a little note from you as she is a unique child who has a harder road to travel than most of us in this world. I would love to hear from you, Take care, Christina
